Sunpath Mongolia

Getting here,
and getting out west.

Mongolia has one international airport and a handful of domestic ones. Here is how travellers usually reach Ulaanbaatar, and how you get from there to the Gobi, Khuvsgul or the Altai.

We book the domestic legs

If a flight is part of your tour, we buy the ticket.

Tell us your international dates and we will fit the domestic flights around them — and never against a same-day connection.

Direct from

Chinggis Khaan International Airport is the only international gateway. These are the cities with a direct service — everywhere else connects through one of them.

The usual connections

Schedules change every season. Treat this as the shape of the journey, not a timetable — confirm the legs with the airline before you book.

Via Seoul

North America, East Asia, Australia, New Zealand

The most used connection. Major carriers fly into Incheon from almost anywhere; MIAT Mongolian Airlines or Korean Air take the last leg to Ulaanbaatar.

Via Beijing

Europe, North America, East Asia, Australia, New Zealand

Fly into Beijing with your own carrier, then MIAT or Air China onward. Check whether your itinerary needs a Chinese transit visa before you book.

Via Moscow

Europe

Aeroflot or MIAT from Sheremetyevo. MIAT's Berlin and Frankfurt services route this way too.

Via Tokyo or Osaka

Japan and the Pacific

MIAT flies the Japan legs. Useful if you are already crossing the Pacific.

Via Istanbul

Europe, the Middle East, Africa

Turkish Airlines via Bishkek. The longest of the options, but it opens up a lot of departure cities.

Domestic flights

Six provincial airports take scheduled flights, all of them through Ulaanbaatar. Flying saves two long driving days at each end of a western trip.

Ulaanbaatar → MurunFor Khuvsgul Lake and the Darkhad valley.
Ulaanbaatar → DalanzadgadFor the southern Gobi — Yolyn Am, Khongor and the Flaming Cliffs.
Ulaanbaatar → UlgiiFor Bayan-Ulgii, the Altai and the eagle hunters.
Ulaanbaatar → UlaangomFor Uvs province and the great lakes of the north-west.
Ulaanbaatar → UliastaiFor Zavkhan and the western steppe.
Ulaanbaatar → ChoibalsanFor Dornod and the eastern plains.
Airlines

Aero Mongolia and Hunnu Air

Both fly out of Ulaanbaatar to the provincial airports. Every domestic route connects through the capital — there are no direct flights between provinces.

Booking

Book early in summer

Aircraft are small and July and August fill up. If a flight is part of your tour we book it for you as soon as your dates are fixed.

Baggage

Allowances are tight

Domestic allowances are well below international ones and excess is charged at the airport. Pack soft bags and keep them light.

Delays

Weather moves schedules

Wind and dust can push a departure by hours. We never plan a domestic flight and an international connection on the same day.

Send the arrival and departure you're holding and we will tell you honestly whether it works.
