Dunes, a capital,
and a herding family

Three days is enough for the mini Gobi at Khugnu Tarna, the ruins of Kharakhorum, and a working day with a family that still moves with its animals.

The short version of central Mongolia

Natural formation, nomadic culture and history — the three things people come for — inside a long weekend. You sleep in ger camps both nights, and you are never more than a few hours from the capital, which makes it the easiest trip on this list to fit around a flight.

Day by day

Forty-six thousand hectares where three provinces meet, and the one place you can stand with dunes on one side and forested mountain on the other. The sand runs about eighty kilometres. Two monasteries sit inside the reserve, and there are camels to ride along the dune line.
