The Gobi and the north in one run
Most people choose between the desert and the lakes. This crosses both: four days in the Gobi, the centre through Kharakhorum and Tsenkher, then north to the Great White Lake and Khuvsgul, which is two million years old and clear to the bottom. It is a lot of driving, and it is the itinerary that leaves nothing you would regret missing.

A 30-metre cliff face, 100 metres wide, that looks like the ruins of an ancient city from a distance. It is an old seabed, and the bands of colour in the rock are millions of years of sediment.
