Emptiness, and what is in it
Mongolia has 1.92 people per square kilometre, and most of the ones who are missing are missing from the Gobi. Six days is the least it takes to see the four things worth the drive — the white cliffs, the ice gorge, the Flaming Cliffs and the dunes — with a herding family and a morning on horseback at the end of it.

A 30-metre cliff face, 100 metres wide, that looks like the ruins of an ancient city from a distance. It is an old seabed, and the bands of colour in the rock are millions of years of sediment.
